Trenching and Excavations
This comprehensive safety course is designed to equip workers and supervisors with the critical skills needed to navigate the high-risk environment of excavation sites. From soil analysis to emergency protocols, you will gain the expertise to prevent the industry’s most common—and deadly—accidents.
By: Safety LMS | Format: Online | Duration: 3 Hours | Certification: 24 Months | Language: EnglishWhat you'll learn
-
Hazard Recognition: Anticipate cave-ins, falling loads, and hazardous atmospheres before they occur.
-
Soil Mechanics: Master the manual and visual tests required to classify soil (Types A, B, and C).
-
Engineering Controls: Understand how to select and install the right protective systems for specific depths and soil conditions.
-
Site Inspection: Learn the duties of the "Competent Person" and how to conduct daily inspections.
-
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure your job site meets or exceeds federal and local safety mandates.
Description
Excavation and trenching are among the most hazardous operations in the construction industry. A single cubic yard of soil can weigh as much as a car, making cave-ins instantaneous and often fatal. This Trenching & Excavation Safety course provides a rigorous foundation in the "Three S’s" of trench safety—Sloping, Shoring, and Shielding—while emphasizing the proactive mindset required to manage a safe site.
The training begins with the fundamentals of Soil Mechanics, teaching participants how factors like moisture content and previous excavation impact stability. You will move through technical requirements for Access and Egress (such as ladder placement and ramps), the proper placement of Spoil Piles, and the detection of underground utilities.
Beyond physical hazards, the course addresses "invisible" risks, including Atmospheric Hazards and water accumulation. Whether you are a laborer, a site supervisor, or designated as the "Competent Person," this course empowers you to make informed, life-saving decisions. By the end of this training, you will not only understand the letter of the law but also possess the practical tools to foster a culture of safety that prevents injuries and saves lives.
